All the updated information and latest messages from the President of the University of Bordeaux about the Covid epidemic are available on this page. Since the easing of lockdown restrictions began, more than 3, staff at the University of Bordeaux have been able to return to our campuses and resume their activities face-to-face in university premises on an occasional or regular basis — including nearly 2, in our research structures. Since last week, however, we have been relieved to observe that the widespread lifting of lockdown is enabling a rapid return to a form of normal or almost normal daily life. Of course, everyone will also need to keep observing preventive health measures and the famous barrier precautions. Directors will therefore be able to define the organizational arrangements for their structures, and in particular, to allow staff to return to sites , in compliance with health instructions and taking account of the impact of these decisions on departments — particularly administrative and support departments — beyond the structure under their responsibility. Working as closely as possible with staff, they will be able to identify, on a case-by-case basis, solutions adapted to particular missions, specific situations, and individual working conditions, while ensuring that staff are not prevented from returning to their normal working environments for too long. While we are still unable to pick up where we left off on March 15, we can adapt the way we operate by bearing a few practical principles in mind:.

Bordeaux en primeur is on. Many thought — and a good proportion of them hoped — this could not, and would not happen. But, whatever your stance, the campaign is now underway — albeit somewhat delayed and with a rather different rhythm to what we are used to. By 1 June , we were only two weeks away from the end of a campaign that had started with the release of the excellent Bellefont Belcier and La Tour St Christophe.
We had already seen hundreds of releases. That suggests two very different campaigns unfolding in very different ways. But there are some striking similarities. Pontet Canet — the one big release of the campaign to date — released its on the 24 May , and its on the 28 May It is far from unthinkable that the first growths or at least those of them that continue to play the en primeur game will release their s earlier in the year than the s, but that only underscores quite how exceptional the campaign is.
My aim in this first piece on Bordeaux is to present a short profile of the market conditions shaping the en primeur campaign. The next piece will reflect more closely on the wines themselves, based on the en primeur samples I have already managed to taste, before turning to a series of more detailed profiles with tasting notes for each of the leading appellations. To start with, it is useful to return to Pontet Canet.

The winemaker vinifies the grapes. In the vineyard, this is also ploughing time. During the vegetative phase, the vines extract the strength they need to grow from the soil and produce quality grapes. The goal is now to add organic fertilizer to the soil to nourish it and prevent deficiencies. The plow turns the soil between the rows and partially covers the vines to protect them from winter frosts. As soon as leaf-fall ends, winemakers begin pruning. This period runs into mid-March.
The winemakers begin as early as mid-November, unless they are able to do it later in a shorter timeframe. The pruning dovetails the removal of the unwanted wood to discard the pruned branches. There are two ways to dispose of these branches: burning or grinding. Once pruning is done, the next step is to remove the unwanted wood. These workers, the tireurs, clear the vine of the wood cut by the pruners that passed before them.

With French President Emmanuel Macron having declared war on the spread of COVID and the European Commission enacting a day travel ban, the Bordeaux wine trade faces a challenge never before seen by this generation. What seemed like a decision of monumental importance a week ago—whether or not to hold the en primeur tastings for the vintage — has been quickly eclipsed by curfews and lockdowns, army field hospitals and emergency funds to halt a national slide into bankruptcy.
All tastings and events have been indefinitely postponed. The French government has imposed a strict day lockdown on the country, asking people to stay home except for essential activities. Anyone leaving the house must have a printed explanation of why they are out or face a stiff fine. One option under discussion is to push back the tastings until late spring or early summer. But that might not be realistic if the virus continues to spread.
Another potential date is September, though there is concern that buyers will be focused on bottled wine, rather than futures, in order to generate immediate cash flow. Another challenge: It’s difficult to sell a wine as futures if no one has tasted it. While the French largely ignored previous calls for social distancing, Macron’s call to war has focused minds. Of more immediate impact, during the lockdown everyone must work from home, with very few exceptions.
We have reorganized our vineyard team so they do not interact among each other. As for the rest of the company, “At DBR Lafite we have closed all our offices and all are working from home wherever possible,” said Prats. Lafite’s actions mirror the situation throughout the region and the rest of France.
The opportunity was made possible by the fact New Zealand had come out of the last stage of its domestic Covid restrictions and abandoned social distancing. When, in early March, commentators had dared to suggest that the spread of Covid might lead to the cancellation of Bordeaux’s en-primeurs week at the end of that month those views were publicly and vigorously rejected by the Union des Grand Crus — a lot changed in the following two weeks.
At such a late stage in the preparations, the UGC was understandably eager to press on and host the week of tastings and elaborate hospitality that comprises the complex marketing campaign they employ to showcase Bordeaux’s most sought-after wines to the world. Alas France announced strict rules limiting people’s movement beyond their own homes and neighborhoods on March 14 and primeur week could not take place.
Other means of allowing buyers to taste the wines had to be found.
